They are basically exploring the oceans, looking for whatever may be an interest to the scientific community.
From climate, possible fossils, minerals, energy, resources, soil, ocean, freshwater, weather, atmosphere, environmental chemistry, biology and anything that might expand our knowledge regarding our history.
Think of it as marine geology.
